“Given the clear benefits and no known risks associated with intrapartum support, every effort should be made to ensure all labouring women receive support, not only from those close to them but also from specially trained caregivers. This support should include continuous presence, the provision of hands-on comfort, and encouragement." - Hodnett, E.D. (Cochrane)
Vanessa helped make the birth of our daughter a wonderful experience for myself and my husband. This was my first child and she answered all of our questions as we prepared for my daughter's birth. The information she gave us in helping to know what questions to ask my ob/gyn and how to prepare a birth plan were worth hiring her alone! However, the day of my delivery she was immensely helpful with pain management, coaching my husband in how to help, and quietly and confidently supporting us as I labored for a while at home and then in labor, delivery, and first breastfeeding at the hospital. She definitely assisted in helping me to have the natural delivery I wanted, and I have suggested hiring a doula to all of my pregnant friends since! - Meredith F.
Vanessa was a great doula. I am very satisfied with her services, prepartum postpartum, and, most importantly, during delivery. I doubt I would have been capable of a natural birth without her. She was scrupulous, respectful, friendly and warm. I highly recommend her! -Sara P.
To be honest, I was very sceptical when my wife suggested we use a doula for our second child's birth. We already had one child, and had hired a doula for that birth. Unfortunately, that child was born through emergency C-Section, and the doula's services weren't utilized. It seemed like a waste, and like a pointless thing to do anyway. I mean, women have been giving birth since the beginning of time without doulas right? For this child, my wife basically went through the pregnancy alone, I was on my 3rd combat tour, and left in the middle of the first trimester. It seemed that if the doula could do something as simple as give my wife peace of mind while I was gone, then it would be well worth it. Additionally my wife was dead-set on having a drug-free VBAC. That is definitely foreign territory to me, so the prospect of having someone there that understands pain management during labor seemed like a good idea. Needless to say, my wife won me over, and we settled on Vanessa from Intelligent Birth Doula Services. This was easily the smartest decision we could have made with regards to my birth plan. My wife went into labor approximately 10 hours after I touched down on my return trip from Afghanistan. I found myself coming home from a combat situation in a foreign country to a foreign situation in my own country. My wife was having serious back pain with her contractions, and I had no idea what I could do to help the situation. Vanessa arrived shortly after my wife was admitted to the hospital and immediately starting helping my wife through the pain. Additionally, she gave me the guidance I was looking for to mitigate my wife's pain. For roughly 10 hours, she talked my wife through countless contractions, and provided the on-site instructions I so desperately needed, as a totally helpless bystander. My wife got the dream childbirth she was looking for, and it is without a doubt due to the contributions of Vanessa. If you are a husband, I highly encourage you to keep an open mind with regards to utilizing a doula. It is a decision you will not regret. I would definitely recommend Intelligent Birth to any soon to be parents out there regardless of what your birth plan is. -Lucas B.
Having Vanessa as a doula was a wonderful experience! My husband and I loved her from the start! She was very informative and took the time to research numerous topics for us. Whatever we had questions about she researched and gave us the pros and cons. During labor Vanessa knew exactly what I needed and was able to help me have the natural birth we wanted. I highly recommend Vanessa! -Sonia W.
Vanessa thank you so much for all your help with Sophia :) Perry loved having you there :) Never had even heard of a Doula but you made a huge difference in the whole experience. Wish you would have been there when I delivered Sean :) -Jeanne K.
Vanessa was professional throughout our entire birth process. All meetings prior to the birth were very comfortable and thorough. Vanessa took her time and ensured she answered all of our questions and brought up a few issues that we hadn't considered since was our first birth. During the birth she was an excellent companion for mom since dad couldn't be there due to military service. She made both of us feel relaxed and comfortable during the entire process. We would definitely recommend her and use her again. -Michael W.
Both my husband and I are very thankful for Vanessa! As an educated couple, who attended numerous birth classes, and work in maternal/infant health- I thought we would have no problem with labor and delivery. That was not the case :) At five hours into the very early stages of labor, we were out of ideas and needed help. Vanessa's calm demeanor and wealth of knowledge was exactly what we needed. It was so nice to have someone there who could describe the poistive and negatives of any decision we had to make. She spent almost 24 hours with us through my labor, delivery, and post delivery- never tiring! I cannot say how much her help during this time meant to our family. She will always hold a special place in our lives - she even cut the umbilical cord! [per my request!]
During pregnancy it was great to have someone else to discuss concerns with. Vanessa's knowledge on current research was impressive and very helpful for making decisions!
Having the support of Vanessa allowed me to deliver my baby naturally, just the way I wanted to. I strongly believe this would not have happened without her. The support she offered throughout pregnancy and labor/delivery was priceless!! I cannot find the words to convey to you how wonderful Vanessa is and how important she was to our team. I wouldn't have a baby without her! -Nikki W.
